As a Fox Chapel Family Photographer, I often photograph families year after year. Watching their story grow becomes one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
I photographed this outdoor session in Oakland near the Frick Fine Arts Building. The stone architecture and warm evening light create a timeless setting. Golden hour softens the shadows and allows families to relax into the experience.
I first met this mother while photographing a wedding for a relative several years ago. Soon after, she asked me to photograph her maternity portraits. We captured that session at Phipps Conservatory, and I have continued photographing her family ever since. Over time, the sessions have included maternity portraits and annual holiday photographs.
For this session, she again selected a velvet gown and leaned into a classic, vintage-inspired style. She intentionally chooses locations with strong architecture, which works beautifully in Pittsburgh. The buildings give structure to the portraits while keeping the attention on connection.
During the session, I guided the family through movement instead of stiff posing. They walked along the pathways, talked together, and paused naturally for hugs. The interaction created the photographs. A Fox Chapel Family Photographer aims to capture how families relate to each other rather than perfect smiles.
Families can learn more about planning their session on my Family Portrait Experience. I also recommend reading about printed photographs through the Professional Photographers of America, which explains how displayed family photos support children’s confidence and belonging.
This session reflects why repeat clients matter so much to me. I photographed their early milestones and now continue documenting each new season.
A Fox Chapel Family Photographer helps families preserve their history one year at a time.
