Capturing Joy, Personality, and Milestone Memories in Every First Birthday

First birthday sessions are some of the most fun and memorable sessions to photograph. This Pittsburgh first birthday session with little Caden was no exception. From the start, I worked with his mother to select playful props that complemented the simple white studio backdrop. Balloons, a festive banner, and letters spelling “O, N, E” created the perfect setting for a series of three adorable portraits.

Cake smash sessions often surprise parents—many one-year-olds are unsure about the cake, and Caden was no different. He wasn’t a fan of the icing, which is common at this age, and sometimes babies cry when cake sticks to their fingers. To keep him comfortable, we made sure he had his favorite toy, a little car, to play with and feel at ease. This thoughtful preparation helped the session remain calm and enjoyable.

Throughout the session, Caden’s personality shone in every frame. From curious expressions to playful glances at the camera, we captured the moments that make a first birthday so unique. The clean, bright backdrop allowed him to stand out, while the balloons, banner, and letters added a touch of festive fun without overwhelming the images.
