Why adult family portraits matter and what an extended family session at Hartwood Acres looks like in the fall.
Some clients become part of the story of my business, and Dan and Ross are that for me. I first met them in 2021 for their engagement session, and the following year I had the honor of photographing their beautiful wedding at Hotel Monaco. So when Dan reached out again this fall about an extended family session, I was immediately excited. As an extended family photographer Pittsburgh families trust, sessions like this are especially meaningful to me because they document not just milestones, but relationships and connection across generations.
We often think of family portraits as something meant for young children. We prioritize photos during the newborn years and early childhood, but somewhere along the way families stop documenting themselves once everyone becomes adults. And yet, this is often when photographs begin to matter the most.
Parents age. Siblings move. Life gets busier and schedules get harder to align. Adult family portraits are no longer about capturing growth, they are about preserving connection.
We chose Hartwood Acres for their session, one of my favorite locations for outdoor portrait locations near Pittsburgh, especially during the fall. Warm light filtered through peak autumn leaves, and the relaxed atmosphere allowed everyone to settle in naturally. Instead of focusing on perfect poses, we spent our time walking the paths, talking, laughing, and letting real interactions unfold. Watching Dan and Ross with his parents and sister, you could feel how comfortable and natural everyone was together.
Sessions like this quietly become some of the most meaningful photographs a family will own. They are rarely urgent, and because of that, they are often the ones we postpone. We assume there will always be another holiday, another year when everyone can get together.
But time moves gently and quickly at the same time.
Years from now, these images will show more than how everyone looked in October. They will show relationships, closeness, and the way a family existed in this exact season of life.
You don’t need an anniversary or a big life event to schedule extended family portraits. Sometimes the only reason you need is that everyone is here right now — and that alone is worth remembering.
